Actor estadounidense



Nació el 15 de noviembre de 1879 en Worcester, Massachusetts.

Abandonó sus estudios y se alistó como soldado durante la guerra Hispano-Americana.

Hizo su debut teatral en Canadá y en Broadway a principios del siglo pasado, con la obra Side-Tracked y luego con Bird of Paradise.

Interrumpió su carrera para servir nuevamente en el frente, esta vez para la I Guerra Mundial, en calidad de Mayor de Caballería.

Siendo un actor famoso en Broadway, en 1915 hizo su debut en el cine. Muy popular, interpretó al héroe de El prisionero de Zenda (Rex lngram, 1922) trabajó con este último al año siguiente en la producción Scaramouche (1923) y al lado de Greta Garbo bajo la dirección de Edmund Goulding (Gran Hotel, 1932) de Clarence Brown, de Charles Brabin o de Victor Fleming.

Firmó con la MGM lo que le permitió aparecer en el genérico de La reina Cristina de Suecia (Rouben Mamoulian, 1933) y de David Copperfield (George Cukor, 1935). Interpretó a distintos tipos como galán, padre, como el juez Hardy en la serie de Andy Hardy. Finalizó su carrera con dos de las mejores películas de Richard Thorpe, El prisionero de Zenda (The Prisoner of Zenda, 1952, esta vez en el papel del cardenal) y Todos los hermanos eran valientes (All the Brothers Were Valiant, 1953).

Lewis Stone falleció el 12 de septiembre de 1953 en Los Angeles, California, de un ataque al corazón provocado parece ser cuando trataba de espantar de su domicilio a tres delincuentes que estaban destrozando los muebles de su jardín.
